CHAPTER 14

Kai slumped over, his eyes shut, and his chest moving slowly. It could have been the stress from the chase, or the handful of antihistamines I had given him, but either way, he should sleep through the night. Hopefully, he’d feel better in the morning. What wouldn’t heal come morning was Scarlett May. And I worried that she might try something like Kimber had.

Emma took a pillow from the sofa and placed it next to Kai. I helped her tip him over until his head rested gently on the pillow. His body was radiating heat. It must have been from the venom. Emma grabbed a throw blanket from the couch, and I shook my head. He’d been through enough; we didn’t need to cook him too.

Once we got Kai situated, Emma left to get ready for bed and Noah turned on the TV, leaving Walker and me on our own. I didn’t want him to leave, and by the way he was lingering, I could see that he didn’t particularly want to go either. He clapped a fist into an open hand and nodded toward the back patio. I stole a glance at Noah as we slipped out into the night. I was on high alert for the bees. Not only the killer ones buzzing around, but the dead ones that lay on the floor, dusted the seats, and sprinkled the railings with their little bee bodies and their sharp stingers. In the glow of the porch light, I scoured every inch of that patio. There wasn’t a single bee to be found, though the hive still lay cracked open on the ground. It looked petrified as if it had fallen months ago and dried out in the day’s light.

“There are no bees,” I said, still looking.

“No. I think you took care of that,” Walker said with a chuckle.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Wilde, you turned them to smoke. You vaporized them into a fine mist. They disintegrated—all of them. You know, I don’t think you realize how badass you are.” He rubbed my tense shoulders.

Badass? That would be the very last way I would describe myself. “I’m not all that you think I am,” I said, careful not to disrupt the massage with too much movement.

It didn’t matter, his hands left my neck as he craned to get a better look at me. “Are we going to do this again? Are you serious?” He breathed a deep sigh and wiped his lips with his hand. “What’s it going to take for you to realize just how special you are?”

A laugh escaped me. This was ridiculous. “You guys literally just told me that my biggest weakness in life was actually a superpower. Who’s trying to pull the wool over whose eyes here? Me? Or you?” I asked, cocking my head to the side.

“Don’t you realize? It’s true. Whereas most people have a processing pattern that goes one way through the woods, yours takes another path and—”

“—Yeah, yeah, yeah. I heard you guys.
